Sink Stopper Stuck and Disconnected from Metal Arm?

Something that connects my sink stopper to the metal arm that moves it broke… inside the drain. The stopper dropped into the hole and wedged itself in there pretty well. Moving the stopper controls do nothing, because it’s not connected for some reason.

Online searches aren’t much help so far; they suggest magnets (ours is magnetic but our strongest magnet isn’t even close to lifting it) and wedging a utility knife in there (there’s no place to put the blade; if this thing’s water-tight, it’s certainly knife-tight).

Any other tips? There’s a little water in it and it’s turning into a nasty cesspool. Also, we use the sink pretty often so this is really an inconvenience.
