What is the safest way to extinguish a flaring tea-light?

I burn my IKEA tea-lights faithfully. Recently however, I had one flare up on me. The entire pool of wax just ignited all of a sudden. The flame was about 6 inches high. It happened at around the 3 1/2-hour mark when the wax had burned beyond 3 quarters of the way. The tea-light was sitting in a ceramic candle holder so I rushed for my oven mitts and carried the whole thing over to the sink. I poured water on it which fueled the flame even more for like 2 seconds, but then it quickly burned out. Obviously, that wasn’t the smartest thing to do, but I panicked. At least it motivated me to read up on handling household fires. However, there seems to be no mention anywhere about putting out flaring tea-lights. Tips are appreciated.
